What is this component on my car?

There's a small, box-like device with a few wires running out of it connected directly to the positive battery terminal. The battery cable goes off in the other direction. Any ideas on what this is, and if it's necessary? I only ask because i'm having a bit of trouble with the car right now, and i'm getting ready to replace the cables. I dont know if i need to be careful with this thing, or if i can just leave it disconnected.

A pic would be nice LOL. It's hard to say but it almost sounds like your describing the starter solenoid in which case it needs to be connected.

It might be a relay for the headlights or an alarm. You can leave it disconnected and see what doesn’t function.

it sounds like the fuse if so the new cables should come equiped with it but keep it just in case.
